"It's more blessed to give than to receive, and especially when so many of our fellow citizens are without jobs and in need, for Christmas is not some distant historical event. It is a spirit, always bringing us closer to each other and closer to a peace of which the angels sang … I want to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas," said Boehner.
Boehner lit the tree along with 7-year-old Johnny Crawford from Sonora, Calif.
The tree, which comes in at 65 feet tall, is a 118-year old Sierra white fir that came from California's Stanislaus National Forest.
It was strung with 10,000 LED lights, according to The Associated Press.
